Monthly Activity Report - July 1969

GENERAL

1. During this reporting period the Coy has been employed as follows:-
1 Jul - Nui Dat Reaction Coy
2-4 Jul - Standown at Beach Annex 1 ALSG
Vung Tau
5-10 Jul - Op WAIOURU
11-14 Jul - Nui Dat
15 Jul - Op MUNDINGBURRA

'G' MATTERS


2. On 5 Jul V Coy were assault landed into AO MOON on Op WAIOURU as a Blocking force in readiness fo or an attack along Route 15 by 274 Regt. When this attack failed to take place V Coy together with B Coy 6 RAR were employed on RIF tasks to locate 274 Regt.

3. Results of Op WAIOURU: -

a. Enemy casualties

1 KIA (BC)
1 AK47 recovered
Numerous docs, food and eqpt were found in caches

b. Own casualties

Nil
4. After Op WAIOURU the Company carried out one days retraining on mines in readiness for operations in the LONG HAI area. This training was carried out by 1 Fd Sqn and served as good reminder of the problems we were likely to face on the next operation.

On 15 Jul V Coy were deployed into the Northern area of the LONG HAI Hills as part of the pacification programme on OP MUNINGBURRA. Already deployed in the Coy AO and attached under operational control were two Military Assistance Training (MAT) Teams from the Anti-Tank Platoon. These teams were employed in two local Militia Posts within our AO. The employment of these teams was of great value in that their training and presence instilled confidence into the local VN Coy making them reasonably efficient units.

6. V Coy's task during this phase of OP MUNINGBURRA was to: -
A Ambush VC routes to the villages and hamlets to the North of the AO.
B Clear known mines from AO.
C Provide reaction source in evcat of attack on LONG DIEN, TAM PHOUC and AH NHUT to the north.

7. Results of this phase were as follows: -

1 WIA (Blood Trails)
6 Packs
1 AK47
1 M1 Carbine
1 PPS
1 Pistol
B. Own losses -
2 Aust Engrs Att KIA
1 Aust Engrs Att WIA
C. Mines and caches -
13 M16 mines recovered
13 x 4gal drums of rice recovered
8. On 30 Jul 69 the Coy were redeployed by air from the Coy Base as part of a 6 RAR/NZ(ANZAC) Bn attack on a reported location of D445 Bn. After an unsuccessful sweep the Coy were redeployed by air to NUI Dat on 31 Jul 69. The Coy Base was destroyed as the Coy were to be repositioned for the remainder of OP MUNDINGBURRA.

'A' MATTERS

9. Discipline: During the reporting period there have been 16 OC's Orders and 3 CO's Orders.

B There have been no strength increases during the period.
11. Leave: Four soldiers proceeded on R & R to HONG KONG

Medical: During the reporting period: -

B One Pte was medevaced.
C One soldier died of illness.
D 11 soldiers were admitted to Hospital.
E A summary of the weekly health States is as follows: -

13. Visits: On 22 Jul V Coy received a visit in the Coy Base from Lt Col Fenton, Comd V Force, and AO NZ Component.

Passport Applications: These have still not been forthcoming although it is three and a half months since they were originally asked for.
